Reception

2019-2020

Miss Luff and Mrs Nolan welcome you as the children begin their learning journey here at St. Peter's Catholic Primary School.

This is a very important and exciting  year and we will work in partnership with you to care for and educate your child. We aim to offer new opportunities to your child to help draw out their ability and potential, helping each individual to grow and develop in preparation for the future.

Our Catholic Faith is at the heart of everything we do in Reception Class. Your child will learn that Jesus loves us all and that we are special. We all try hard to treat everyone that we meet with love and respect, just as Jesus did.

Your child will be learning skills, gaining new knowledge and demonstrating understanding through seven areas of learning and development.

The three prime areas are:

  • Communication and Language;
  • Physical Development;
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

Your child will also develop skills in four specific areas. These are:

  • Literacy;
  • Mathematics;
  • Understanding the World;
  • Expressive Arts and Design.

Autumn Term 2019

'Marvellous Me'

Reception have settled well into their new class at St Peter's school. Over the first half term, we give children the opportunity to get used to the routines and rules of the school and classroom.

We have worked closely on our personal, social, emotional development learning to share and take turns with our new friends. We have spent time getting to know the familiar adults in school and who we could ask if we had a problem.

We enjoyed visiting Mrs Downes, our headteacher, who brought us new books for our reading corner!

Each morning, we take part in 'Dough Disco'. We do this to strengthen the muscles in our hands to prepare us for writing and having a secure pencil grip. Each day we have a nursery rhyme to sing along to and complete the fine motor movements using our own pot of dough. We love to 'pinch', 'squeeze', 'prod' and 'poke' the dough!

Mrs Nolan helped us to design our faces using art materials and paper plates. We used a mirror to find our facial features such as our eyes, nose and mouth and used this to help us place them on our face. Take a look at our 'Art Gallery'

We have really impressed Miss Luff with how well we got changed for our very first PE lesson! We are working on our fundamental skills such as balancing, travelling in space and throwing and catching in our Physical Development lessons.

Autumn 2

'Special Times and Special Places'

 To begin our second half term in Reception, Miss Luff introduced our new text to us 'Owl Babies'. The classroom turned dark and we used candles, lanterns and torches to set the scene of the story. Although we didn't read the story, we found out lots from the front cover. We are very excited to begin the story over the next few weeks.

There are many special times over the next few weeks from Diwali and Bonfire Night to Advent and Christmas. Reception are learning lots about the world around them, how different people celebrate and the different customs and traditions.

Spring 2 2019

Amazing Animals

Reception have had an amazing term learning all about animals!
We began our journey in the desert learning all about safari animals, we then moved onto the jungle and found out all about animals in the rainforest and we finished our journey down on the farm learning all about the animals you would find there.

In Literacy, we began the topic by reading 'Dear Zoo' by Rod Campbell. The children thoroughly enjoyed this story and could read it all by themsevles by the end of the topic. They wrote their own letters to the zoo asking for an animal, which animal would you like from the zoo?

We had a great afternoon when Miss Birch transformed our school hall into a jungle! We became explorers for the afternoon and had to complete a series of missions to pass the test. We packed a bag suitable for the jungle, went on an animal hunt in the trees and built a raft to get us safely across the river.
