As a Catholic school, Religious Education is at the heart of everything we do. Our Catholic ethos permeates the whole curriculum and is reflected in our relationships, values, worship and daily life. Through a Christ-centred education, we seek to nurture the spiritual, moral and personal development of every child, helping them to grow in faith, knowledge and understanding.

At St Peter's, we follow the Religious Education Directory, To Know You More Clearly, the curriculum for Catholic schools in England and Wales. This curriculum places Scripture at its heart and enables pupils to develop a deeper understanding of God's relationship with humanity and the teachings of the Catholic Church.

The curriculum is organised into six branches which are studied by all year groups throughout the year:

• Creation and Covenant
• Prophecy and Promise
• Galilee to Jerusalem
• Desert to Garden
• To the Ends of the Earth
• Dialogue and Encounter

These branches support pupils in exploring Scripture, Catholic beliefs, prayer and worship, and how faith is lived out in everyday life. Catholic Social Teaching is taught explicitly through Religious Education and is woven throughout the wider curriculum, helping children to understand their responsibility to care for others, serve the common good and care for God's creation.

Through the RED curriculum, prayer and liturgy, sacramental preparation, charitable outreach and opportunities for service, we encourage our pupils to become faith-filled, compassionate and active members of both the Church and society.

By placing Christ at the centre of all we do, we aim to develop religiously literate young people who can reflect spiritually, think ethically and live out the Gospel values with confidence, courage and compassion in the world today.

Other Faiths

As part of our Religious Education curriculum, pupils also learn about other world faiths and religious traditions. This helps children to develop respect, understanding and appreciation of different beliefs and cultures within our diverse society. Through the study of other faiths, pupils explore similarities and differences, deepen their understanding of their own faith, and learn the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and living together in harmony.

At St Peter's, children study Sikhism, Hinduism, Judaism and Islam during dedicated units of work, learning about beliefs, practices, festivals, worship and ways of life. Wherever possible, we enrich this learning through visitors, artefacts, discussion and opportunities to encounter people of different faiths and backgrounds. These experiences help our pupils to become knowledgeable, respectful and compassionate citizens who value the dignity of every person.

This fits particularly well with the final RED branch, Dialogue and Encounter, which encourages pupils to engage respectfully with people of other faiths and worldviews, recognising our shared humanity and God's love for all.
