Music Intent
At St Peter's, music education is about more than learning facts — it’s about becoming musical. Our curriculum, inspired by the Model Music Curriculum (2021), helps children develop both the skills to make music and the understanding to think musically.
Through singing, listening, composing, and performing, pupils build their musical knowledge and confidence. Lessons are carefully sequenced to develop key musical concepts such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and structure. These are explored through a wide range of musical styles and traditions from around the world, helping children appreciate music’s cultural richness.
Each unit follows a consistent structure: active listening, creative exploration, practice, performance, and reflection. Singing and movement are central to every lesson, supporting musical development and expression. Children also learn to work collaboratively, building social and musical skills together.
While this curriculum focuses on classroom music, it complements wider musical opportunities such as instrumental lessons, choirs, and performances. Our aim is to nurture a lifelong love of music and provide every child with the tools to express themselves musically.
