Art Intent

At St Peter’s Catholic Primary School, we have created a high-quality art and design curriculum, which engages, inspires and challenges pupils. From an early age children are exposed the works of art of great artists, architects, sculptors and printmakers. They have planned opportunities to analyse great works of art and are taught artistic techniques to master skills of sketching, painting, sculpting and printing. Children are encouraged to take up the role of knowledgeable and discerning critics of their work and the work of others leading them to develop skills of reviewing, refining, improving and evaluating- strengthening their understanding and appreciation of art.

Knowing artists and their great works of art contributes considerably to children developing cultural capital. It is with this in mind that we built an art curriculum based on the world’s greatest artists, architects, sculptors and printmakers. The artists and works of art chosen give the children a significant insight into that period of history and reinforce their learning in history and geography promoting knowledge retention and deeper learning. During KS1, children study ancient Egyptian art, 15-century murals and tapestries and early Christian and medieval art supporting their study of Egyptians, Anglo Saxons and Vikings. In KS2, children study the monuments of ancient Rome and Byzantium, African and Chinese art and Victorian architecture to deepen their knowledge of history and geography units already studied.

A good understanding of art grows out of three modes of knowledge, creative, historical and analytical. The art curriculum embraces all three modes with a special emphasis on creativity and active participation.
