St Peter's Catholic

Primary School

"Loved by Jesus, we love, we learn, we live and grow together for Him"

Intent

The intent of our Relationship and Health Education ( RHE)  curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child with Catholic values and teachings at its core. At St Peter’s, it is our intent that RHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. Our curriculum helps the children build a positive self-image in order to develop healthy relationships with others and is interwoven with the behaviour and Catholic ethos of the school

At St. Peter’s, RHE  is taught discretely but we believe is not a standalone subject; the knowledge, skills and values that are developed are a golden thread underpinning everything that we do.

The thematic approach to RHE enables us to embed what is taught through other areas of the curriculum. As a Catholic school, much of the RHE curriculum aligns hand in hand with the RE Curriculum, Catholic values and Catholic Social Teachings. British Values and the knowledge of ‘Living in the Wider World’ are explicitly taught in foundation subjects whether that is showing tolerance to other cultures in Music or Art, or global citizenship in Geography.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Relationships and Sex Education within our RHE curriculum is underpinned by the belief in unique dignity of the human person and that we are all made in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, it is rooted in the Catholic Church’s teaching of the human person and presented in a positive framework of Christian ideals via TenTen’s Life to the Full Scheme of Work.

It enshrines Catholic values relating to the importance of stable relationships, marriage and family life. It also promotes those virtues which are essential in responding to God’s call to love others with a proper respect for their dignity and the dignity of the human body. Other virtues will be explicitly explored and promoted: faithfulness, fruitfulness, chastity, integrity, prudence, mercy and compassion.
